December 10th will have veterans and communities nationwide recognizing departed veterans with Christmas wreathes.

It may just be a Christmas wreath but to others it is a show of respect for veterans of all service branches who protected our country.
At noon on December 10th around the country, as well as at Lone Oak Cemetery in Leesburg, Christmas wreathes will be laid to rest on the graves of the brave men and women who sacrificed so much for the United States.

The City of Tavares had very successful Christmas Light-Up event on Saturday evening as both the largest crowd and the longest parade, ever, took over downtown for the opening festivities. The overflow crowd then moved to Wooton Park as kids young and old greeted Santa as he arrived by seaplane, viewed an awesome fireworks display and light-up, and then spent the evening “ice” skating, dodging snowflakes, and participating in a variety of holiday activities. Thanks to all who visited Tavares and helped to make T’was the Flight Before Christmas” a great community event.

BUSHNELL — The Lake County Extension Office, in partnership with the Citrus, Hernando, Sumter and Pasco County Extension Offices, will be hosting the upcoming AGRItunity 2012 Conference on Saturday, Jan. 28 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the West Central Florida Agricultural Education Center located at 7620 State Road 471, Bushnell. A pre-conference farm tour and hydroponics workshop will be held on Friday, Jan. 27.
The AGRItunity 2012 Conference includes eight workshops, a large tradeshow, animal exhibits, antique farm equipment and more. The keynote speaker will be Ben Hewitt, an author and farmer, who will be giving a talk entitled, “The Future’s in the Dirt: Digging into localized agriculture and its potential to revitalize health, environment and regional economies.”

CLERMONT — Second grade students from Sawgrass Bay Elementary recently played host to meteorologist and TV personality Tony Mainolfi, from Central Florida’s WESH Channel 2.
“We were very privileged to have Mr. Mainolfi come speak to our students and share his expertise with us,” said Christina Lees, Second Grade Team Leader. “He was very engaging and he gave our students the chance to learn all about forecasting, Doppler radar and tornadoes from a real weather expert.”

GROVELAND — South Lake High’s FFA members won first place at the Food Science and Technology Career Development Event (CDE) on Dec. 3 at the University of Florida in Gainesville.
South Lake High’s senior chapter team, consisting of Clayton Willis, Kansas Henderson, Kyler Watts and Morgan Purvis, placed first in the state with an opportunity to compete on the national level next October. For the highest individual scores at the event, Purvis placed fourth and Henderson finished fifth. The school’s junior chapter team placed 20th in the completion. Team members included Ali Lane, Amanda Holton, Matt Staples and Meghan Hutcheson.

CLERMONT — East Ridge High and Clermont Middle swept the competition at this year’s Citrus Evaluation Career Develop Event (CDE) on Nov. 17 at the Florida FFA Leadership Training Center in Haines City.
Twenty-five high school teams and 24 middle school teams from throughout Florida competed in the Citrus Evaluation CDE, including several others from Lake County Schools that performed well. Lake Minneola High finished 11th, one spot ahead of South Lake High, and Gray Middle School finished in fourth place.

Lexie, Goose and Maverick are three Jack Russell Terriers in Leesburg that have taken the state and nation by storm with their over 100 combined championship wins in racing trials.
