Santa by Seaplane?

Santa is taking a short rest in Tavares before making his rounds on Christmas Eve.  He will visit with children on Saturday, December 17, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the front porch of the Tavares Prop Shop, located in Wooton Park on Ruby Street. Photos of the children with Santa will be provided for free.

Governor Appoints New LSCC Board Members

LEESBURG – Governor Rick Scott announced three new members to Lake-Sumter Community College’s District Board of Trustees.  Representing Sumter County are Kelly L. Flores of Oxford and Kelly S. Rice of Webster.  The new Lake County trustee is Emily A. Lee of Eustis.  The December 9 announcement also included the reappointment of Clermont’s Raymond “Scott” Blankenship and Richard P. Bowersox of Fruitland Park, both representing Lake County.  All started their terms on December 8, which are subject to confirmation by the Florida Senate.

Teachers at Lake County Schools Achieve National Board Certification

TAVARES — Lake County Schools congratulates Marni Whitehead of Windy Hill Middle and Tamara Russell Valdez of Grassy Lake Elementary for achieving National Board Certification.

These two teachers have successfully demonstrated advanced teaching knowledge, skills and practices to become National Board Certified and have met rigorous criteria through intensive study, expert evaluation and peer review.

Clermont Student Wins Red Ribbon Week Contest

Informed Families/The Florida Family Partnership (I.F.) announced that 12-year-old Kayla Bowers, a sixth-grade student at East Ridge Middle School in Clermont, won the 26th annual Red Ribbon Week’s contest  “It’s Up to Me to be Drug Free.”

The nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention campaign reaches more than 6,000 schools throughout Florida every year, and 80 million people nationwide.

Kiwanis Club of Clermont Takes Stock in Children

LEESBURG — Take Stock in Children of Lake and Sumter Counties has been selected as the proceeds recipient from The Kiwanis Club of Clermont’s Annual Oakley Seaver Golf Tournament.

This is the fifth year Take Stock in Children has been selected to receive the proceeds from the event. Several businesses and individuals formed teams from throughout Central Florida to compete at Legends Golf Course in Clermont on Oct. 7. This Kiwanis fundraising event has fulfilled the wish of the late Oakley Seaver to provide four year scholarships to deserving, at-risk students, complete with mentor activities and parent participation.

Boys Scouts Hold Camporee

You can’t have Scouting without ‘Outing’ and the weekend December 3-5 over 3,000 Scouts and Scouters from all over Central Florida, many from Lake County, participated in the 2011 Council Camporee, held at our Scout Ranch in Paisley.

This special event happens only once every 3 years and the theme for this Camporee was “Fun on a Human Scale”. The Scouts worked on team building and communications skills in addition to playing some great games like Ultimate Frisbee, Tarantula Race, Tank Maneuvers and Human Foosball. They also played a series of “Minute to Win it” style activities to go along with a Jamboree oriented Midway.

Santa Stops Sled in Tavares

Christmas hassles got you down?  Tired of all the holiday to-do lists?  Well, it’s no different for Santa, who recently decided he needed a little rest & relaxation, Florida style.

Old St. Nick himself arrived by seaplane and joined Tavares residents young and old in the downtown Light Up activities.  After visiting with hundreds of children, taking a ride in the horse drawn carriage and snacking at the various booths, Santa was preparing to head for home.

Lake Graduation Rate Gains

TAVARES— For the fifth consecutive year, Lake County Schools increased its graduation rate eclipsing its best-ever performance of 80.82 percent from the 2009-2010 school year by nearly one-and-a-half percentage points to 82.21 percent.

The Florida Department of Education (DOE) released graduation rates for the 2010-11 school year and five high schools from Lake County Schools showed positive gains:

Leave a Legacy

Clermont – The Lake-Sumter Community College Foundation, Inc. is offering commemorative bricks to community members who would like to support the new Cooper Memorial Library at LSCC South Lake Campus. “Supporting the Cooper Memorial Library with a commemorative brick is the perfect way to honor an alumnus, friend, family member, business or civic group and also helps build a legacy in our community brick by brick,” said Rosanne Brandeburg, Executive Director of the LSCC Foundation, Inc. The engraved bricks will enhance the walkway leading into the Cooper Memorial Library, and will be a permanent tribute to those who have supported the Library for years to come.
