Leesburg – The Lake-Sumter Community College Foundation, Inc. exceeded its goal of $225,000 and raised $250,211 to help students in “Changing Lives and Building Futures” at Lake-Sumter Community College during its Annual Campaign. Our annual campaign went far beyond raising funds. As we move forward through these challenging economic times, more and more people will take advantage of “a great education close to home.”

Leesburg – With a new year comes new leadership and on January 11th the Lake-Sumter Community College Foundation, Inc. installed its new officers and welcomed 13 new board members to the LSCC Family for the upcoming year and also recognized the service and support of eight outgoing board members. As the principal fund-raising organization for Lake-Sumter Community College, the Board of Directors play a crucial role in the success of the college with their assistance to the Foundation in generating private gifts to the college that includes support for students, faculty, staff and instruction.

UMATILLA — The holidays were especially nice for Janelle Woodyard, a fourth grade teacher at Umatilla Elementary, as her first book, A Girl’s Guide to Softball, hit the shelves.
The hardcover book is published by Capstone Press, based in Mankato, Minn. The publishing company provides high quality, easy-to-read nonfiction to school libraries for grades K-5. The book is geared toward girls, ages 9-13, who already have some prior knowledge of the sport and are looking to improve their game. It is also a great resource for girls who might want to start playing softball, but don’t know anything about it.

Tavares – The City of Tavares announced today that a $2.6 million proposed downtown stormwater project has just received a financial boost with the award of a $750,000 grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
The FDEP grant will be used to construct a stormwater retention pond that will be located behind the Lake County Detention Center. The purpose of the project is to eliminate direct discharging of the City’s storm water into Lake Dora, improving the water quality, maintaining a wide range of recreational uses, and providing for a healthy, well-balanced population of fish and wildlife.

Tavares – The City of Tavares announces a new art exhibit as part of Art in the Square beginning on January 20, 2012, 5:30 p.m. at Tavares City Hall.
Colors of nature is the predominant theme of these artworks, with vibrant hues on canvas, wood and glass, as well as idyllic childhood memories of splashing in the pond and playing by the shore. The exhibit includes stained glass artworks, carvings and oil on canvas.

The Safe Climate Coalition of Lake County is sponsoring its 7th annual Sticker Shock Contest; open to all Lake middle-and-high school students (public, private, home-schooled).
Starting Tuesday, January 10, 2012, the contest stems from the Sticker Shock Project which began in 1996 in Pennsylvania to discourage adults from buying alcoholic drinks for minors.

A new worship service at Lake Square Presbyterian Church is focused towards those battling addiction.

Addiction, no matter the type, can cause any person to feel there is no end in sight and no way that anyone can help them overcome the hardship.
Lake Square Presbyterian Church in Leesburg plan to extend their church “hand” out to those battling harmful addiction with their Next Step worship service, starting on January 13th.
The service will begin at 6:30 p.m. with coffee and conversation followed by the worship service at 7 p.m., concluding with available resource tables, qualified addiction counselors and an AA meeting (not affiliated with the church).
