Leesburg’s Brad Dunn is known around the world for his nickname and his strength
Story by Michael Harris
Brad Dunn loads a round sphere in the back of his Cooper mini; passerbys might look at the bulky object as though it were Styrofoam the way Dunn lifts it.
It hits the deck of his hatchback with a thud. The car sinks a few inches downward as it takes on the concrete stone.
“Aw, it’s just 205 pounds,” he says to the car.
The mass of 205 pounds with no handle to latch on to may be impossible to some, but in Brad Dunn’s world it’s the weight of a tennis ball.
Not even the Cooper can handle the weight.
“It rolls around back there and it put a dent inside of it.”
Brad is a behemoth in size, strength and heart. As an American Strongman Corporation competitor, Brad is one of the strongest men in the world and competes everywhere from Orlando to Finland. Read Full Entry

Congratulations to Lindsey Cipris of Leesburg who was crowned the 2010 Cover Girl winner at the Best of the Best celebration in December. Congratulations also to the amazing runner-ups; Kimberlee Davan, Sierra Ford, Chelsea Smith and Maria Sorbera.
Winner Lindsey Cipris is a born and raised native of Leesburg and sees that the 2010 Cover Girl should also be someone who characterizes Lake County. “I think [the cover girl] is someone who represents Lake County with great leadership qualities and is interesting as every cover girl has always had an interesting story,” she says Lindsey plans to become a dental hygienist and hopes to attend Valencia Community College’s dental hygiene degree program after finishing classes at Lake-Sumter Community College this spring. Outside of class, she is also the smiling face that greets you at the Northgate Animal Clinic in Leesburg where she works as the receptionist. Read Full Entry

Rafiki Foundation’s Rosemary Jensen Dedicates her Life to Africa’s Youth.
Written by Blair Townley; Photos by Anthony Rao
Africa: It’s a continent an ocean away from the United States and probably a world away in several people’s minds, especially during the Christmas season.
Africa and its people are never far from the mind of Rosemary Jensen of Umatilla, especially after seeing firsthand how their lives have been affected by the deadly disease AIDS. Read Full Entry

Gotta love friends who enter you into a contest without you knowing about it? Winner Mandy Wettstein can attest to that same experience of friendship after learning she won the LAKE Magazine’s Unhitched contest but has chosen to celebrate her surprise win.
Mandy is a recognized presence in Lake County, whether at chamber functions with clients or attending annual Lake County events with her two daughters. Lake Magazine’s Pooch Perfect was not about winning a contest. Let’s face it; with more than 50 entries, it can be argued every dog in Lake County is a winner. It was just to describe how perfect the owners felt their dog was to them. And every email we received exclaimed how great their dog is. Whether it was helping around the house, surviving a disease, playing, napping and everything in between, these pooches have proved their worth.
Which “begs” the question, who is happier – these dogs or the owners? It’s the perfect compliment for the perfect pooch.
Take a look at the gallery photos including all our entries for Pooch Perfect. Read Full Entry

University of Florida track extraordinaire and football star running back Jeff Demps speaks during last month’s media day about how he had to put weight on and get in “football” shape. At the time this video was shot, Demps didn’t know if he would be starting for the Gators at tailback or Chris Rainey.
On Monday it appears the offseason weight gain is working in Demps’ favor as UF head coach made a comment during his press conference that Demps would most likely start this Saturday’s game against Charleston Southern.
“If we started tomorrow, Jeff Demps would start at tailback, Brandon James would be the H [Halfback] and David Nelson, Aaron Hernandez, Deonte Thompson and Riley Cooper would lineup on the outside,” Meyer said.
Demps and the Gators kick off the season at 7 p.m. at Florida Field. Read Full Entry

There was one resounding statement the Fit For A Change contestants made following their final weigh in – “I feel better.”
After six months of competing and listening to their personal trainers bark at them to keep going, the contest is over. Jason Dalrymple, perhaps the one contestant who wasn’t bothered by a nagging injury, claimed the top spot.
“I’m not done yet,” says Jason, trained by Al Cardiello at Omni Fitness. “I want to keep going with my health and fitness so I can live a longer more fulfilled life.”
For others, injuries plagued them and limited them in their workouts, like the two herniated discs Stephanie Hannon suffered throughout the competition.
“I had that going into the contest but I just didn’t know,” says Stephanie who was trained by her husband, Blake, at Body Transformations in Clermont. “I was in a lot of pain after just giving birth eight weeks before the contest. I thought the pain was from just hanging around and not working out.”
Brian Walch, trained by Hemant Hariprashad from the National Training Center in Clermont, had double trouble during the contest. First knee surgery limited his workouts and then in April he was shelved due to being diagnosed with prostate cancer. Read Full Entry

The stormy weather didn’t damper the sizzling spirits of finalists
Written by Blair Townley
May 26, 2009 was definitely a night for the men of Lake County. I’m talking about the Hottest Husbands contest hosted by LAKE Magazine for the five husband finalists at the Mission Inn Resort at Howey-in-the-Hills.
It was definitely a night of hijinks, with dollar bills placed in the belts of the finalists by their wives, while humor was had by contestants as they practiced their male model swagger on the runway.
7 of the original Top 10 finalists were present for the fashion walk, decked out in apparel provided by Trueman’s Fine Men’s Clothing.
Owner Jay Hurley even helped introduce the contestants and mentioned that the audience could even “strip off” the clothes of the contestants if they wanted the clothes. He was joking though.
The mood was buzzing with excitement and nerves for the finalists by those attending to cheer them on. Finalist Daniel Norris’ wife Lauren mentioned her husband had the local, national and international votes on his side from friends and family in Florida, Texas and even Italy.
