The Man in the Mirror Meets the Girl on the Poster

What can be said about the tragedies that befell our world yesterday? The King of Pop, Michael Jackson, and Charlie’s Angel Farrah Fawcett have both died before their time. Their gifts of talent were taken before we could truly enjoy all that could be of them. It was just a sad day all around.

As I come to grips with what has happened, I tried to remember when I first learned about Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t born when Farrah Fawcett was in her heyday on television and in TV movies but she will always be to me the mother from “Man of the House.” Those that were fans of Jonathon Taylor Thomas from TV’s Home Improvement remember that movie well and probably saw it several times on screen. Farrah played Jonathon’s mom and her beauty and sense of self was easy to recognize right away. She just carried herself with such grace and confidence and probably could have made a paper bag look good along with it. So to me, she will always be remembered as the beautiful mom that always put her son first (which could also have translated to her enduring love for her troubled son Redmond).

As for Michael Jackson, I was just a baby learning to walk when Michael was making it big with “Thriller” and the Moonwalk (which I still can’t do!). Where my Jackson memories lie is in the album Bad and the music video for his hit “Smooth Criminal.” Even at the age of 4 or 5, I remember just being mesmerized by his swift dancing skills and how he captivated the scene in his white zoot suit. I wanted to dance like that or just settle for being the girl he sang to in “The Way You Make Me Feel” video.

I also remember, which surprisingly not many people do, that Micheal was once featured at Disney’s Epcot where the current 3-D show, “Honey I Shrunk the Audience”, is. The 3-D show before it was “Captain Nemo” and Michael was, of course, Captain Nemo and went through a sci-fi/Star Wars type world to defeat an evil queen with slick dance moves and music. He ended the performance with “Another Part of Me,” a song I will forever connect to that show.

Although his face, skin and behavior changed, that voice never changed and that will be how I will always remember Michael Jackson. He had a voice that spanned the globe and led everyone, no matter what race they were, to collectively moonwalk with one glove and studded jacket. I have a feeling everyone will be listening to the same soundtrack today while also watching some old school Charlie’s Angels. Rest in Peace Farrah Fawcett, Michael Jackson and the Star Search man Mr. Ed McMahon! May God watch over you and your surviving families!
