Why Did It Happen To Me
With any sports star, there is always the interest in putting your life on paper for all to see.
Former NFL player and Clermont resident Elgin Davis saw this interest come to life with the publishing of his autobiography, “Why Did It Happen To Me.”
The book details his childhood growing up in Jacksonville to becoming a college football player for UCF. His dreams of being a professional football player were achieved when he was drafted as a running back for The New England Patriots and later the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Elgin’s story also deals with the heartache of how constant injuries led to the shortening of his NFL career as well as the devastation left after the murder of friend and fellow NFL player Darryl Usher.
What is most powerful about “Why Did It Happen to Me” is the recognition of faith throughout the book. Elgin demonstrates that he has and always will be a man of God, even when he felt God was against him due to his circumstances.
Elgin also discusses his conversion into Islam and how it pulled him out of his depression from the death of Darryl. He later resigned from his position as the Minister of Myhammad Mosque but never let go of his relationship with God.
It is a powerful message Elgin leaves that no matter what life throws at you, which in his case was seeing his NFL dreams flourish and fall constantly, God is always there to help you up and keep you going. I applaude Elgin for being unashamed in his declaration of God and wanting to be a godly role model for others.
