Sutton Bound For USA Basketball
Written by Michael Harris
Montverde Academy boys basketball coach Kevin Sutton picked up some extra duties this summer as he was selected as an assistant coach to Don Showalter for the 2009-10 USA Basketball Men’s Developmental National Team.
“I was awed and humbled to be asked to coach for USA Basketball,” said Kevin in a press release. “I’m excited for several reasons: for one, to be able to serve my country in a capacity that I am most comfortable in as a basketball coach; secondly, to have the opportunity to work with an organization like USA Basketball; and third, I was honored and humbled to be selected to be a part of this new venture with the U16/U17 Junior National Teams.”
The USA Developmental National Team will look to capture the gold medal at the inaugural 2009 FIBA Americas U16 Championship, slated to be held June 17-21 in Mendoza, Argentina, and qualify for the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship. Kevin has worked with coach Showalter before and the team’s other assistant Herman Harried. Showalter is a veteran coach of more than 35 years and is coaching at Mid-Prairie High School in Iowa. Harried is the coach at Lake Clifton High School in Maryland.
“I know that we will be able to work very well together as a staff,” Kevin said. “With Don as the head coach, he will tap into Herman’s strengths, he will tap into my strengths and collectively we will be a united coaching staff. I think we’ll do a very, very good job.”
In six seasons at Montverde, Kevin has compiled a 136-27 record for an .834 winning percentage, recording no less than 20 wins each season. In what was his best season to date at the school, his 2006-07 squad posted a perfect 30-0 mark and finished No. 4 nationally and No. 3 in the South Region in USA Today’s final Super 25 rankings.
The eight-team tournament will feature Under-16 national teams from the FIBA Americas Zone, which includes North, South and Central America and the Caribbean. The top three finishing nations will qualify to compete in the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship, against U17 national teams from around the globe.
