Saving Our Oceans With Hair

posted by eric on 19th, 2010

It’s just hair you may say or think, but to Mount Dora’s Pure Aveda Salonspa your hair will be helping to stop one of the biggest oil spills in our nation’s history. Recently the salon shipped 70 pounds of their clients’ hair clippings to be used for creating absorbent booms that protect the beaches from the spill. The hair is stuffed in nylon stockings and can take in about one quart of oil in a minute, with the bonus of being wrung out and used again several more times.

“As a FAB PRO Green Conscious Certified business, partnering with [the environmental non-profit group] Matter of Trust is a natural solution for us to re-purpose hair clippings and a safe, non-toxic way to participate in the Gulf Spill cleanup,” says Pure Aveda Salonspa owners Michele and Ric Wilson in a joint statement.

The salon will continue their efforts to help with the oil spill by collecting for another batch of donated hair clippings and providing a donation spot for stockings at their downtown Mount Dora location.

“Our salon guests love knowing that their hair is doing something to help,” the Wilsons add.

If you would like to help by getting a haircut or donating some clean, used pantyhose, please visit Pure Aveda Salonspa at 206 West Fifth Avenue in downtown Mount Dora, call at (352) 383-9091 or visit them at www.pureaveda.com .
