Jeff Demps SEC

Under wet conditions at Tom Black Track at the University of Tennessee, former South Lake football and track star, Jeff Demps, outran the competition and the rain to capture the 100-meter dash at the SEC Championships.
Demps’ time of 10.06 is the fourth fastest in school history and the second fastest time in the NCAA this year.
“I knew coming into the race this was going to be a tough one, all those guys are great competitors,” Demps said in a Knoxville News-Sentinel story. “Round about the middle of the race I kind of felt myself pull away, and I kind of knew then that I had it. You just try not to lose focus and when you’re running in a race like this, you’ve just got to come out and compete.”
Demps and the Gators went on to claim the school’s first SEC track and field title since 1987. Ironically, Demps’ personal sprint coach at the National Training Center, Dennis Mitchell, helped lead the Gators to that 1987 title.
In fact, Mitchell is only one of three Gators ahead of the time Demps set on Sunday. Mitchell ran a 10.03 in 1988. John Capel is tied with Mitchell for second on the list with his time set in 1999 and Bernard Williams is the fastest at 9.99 in 2000.
