What Easter is All About

posted by blair on 5th, 2010

Everyone probably knows that Easter is not about the eggs, chocolate bunnies (though good that they are) and new spring attire. It is about recognizing the events that happened to one individual, Jesus Christ, and how his death changed the face of mankind forever.

The First Baptist Church Eustis know very well the meaning behind Easter and Good Friday, and chose to recognize those days this year with their first annual “Walk the Passion” event from last Thursday to Saturday night.

People walking the path were led by guides along a half hour tour, stopping at makeshift stages that depicted events that occurred from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday in the life of Jesus and the local townspeople.

Actors were church members, from children to seniors, who dedicated many hours of their time to represent the people of Jerusalem. The church also recruited six “Jesuses” to show the different events Jesus went through leading up to his crucifixion and resurrection.

The efforts of the church were greatly appreciated by all that attending, including me as I got to be one of the first groups on that Thursday before Easter to experience the “walk.”

The most moving part of the walk had to be to the crucifixion scene. As the sun set in the background, Jesus was on the cross looking up to God asking for forgiveness for those around him and dying as he whispered, ”It is finished.” Not a word was uttered throughout the two-minute presentation and my group of 20 quietly walked to the next scene still visualizing the power of that crucifixion scene.

The church’s website,  www.firstbaptistchurcheustis.com have the exclusive shots of the event, including the emotional last moments of Jesus on the cross. May the church perform the walk next year and may you make the trip with your family to understand that it is Jesus and God should be favored on Easter, not the bunny!
