Doing what you love

Watching the Academy Awards on Sunday, it was interesting to hear winners’ acceptance speeches as they talked about their experiences with these award-winning characters and how they felt their stories needed to be shared with others.

The actors and actresses that won (and didn’t win) all told stories in the ways they captured the mannerisms and personalities of their characters. You believed Monique was a poor, abusive mother when she is really a successful, non-abusive comedienne and actress. You believed Jeff Bridges was some middle-aged folk singer handling the difficulties of a comeback instead of a recognized talent and name in the entertainment world. You believed Sandra Bullock was a no nonsense Southern suburban wife and mom when she is neither a Southern mother (though she is quite the versatile comedy actress, and dramatic actress if you have seen ‘The Net.’)

Watching their characters come alive on screen reminds me a lot of why I enjoy being a writer. I love to see a person’s life unfold before me as they tell me experiences they have had or explain what their business provides the community.

A person may be hesitant towards talking about themselves or they may have too much information to cover in a 30-40 minute interview, so I enjoy being able to open them up and help them figure out what they most want to talk about.

Everyone has a story to tell and being able to write about it is the most exciting job in the world. I love to ask questions about what they offer or what the experience means to them as they seem to come alive and know what they want to say.

As I write their story or advertisement piece, I begin to see the story come together through my transcribed notes and envision them as puzzle pieces just waiting to be put together. It’s a story just waiting to be told to others and I feel privileged to be appointed to tell that story to others.

What I have definitely learned is that there are several amazing people in Lake County with countless stories to tell and they don’t need an Oscar to make it known to others. They just need a person who makes them feel comfortable to share and is willing to put the puzzle pieces together to make a beautiful story come to life!
