img_7913 Mount Dora High Tight End/Defensive End Bruce Heggie signed with the University of Notre Dame on Signing Day, Feb. 3. Heggie, who was recruited by the University of Cincinnati during his junior season, had been hampered by injuries in his senior season. New Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly remembered Heggie and called on him two weeks ago.

Heggie made his visit to Notre Dame last weekend and signed with the Irish on Wednesday. Heggie plans on majoring in pre-med and one of his hobbies will transform well at Notre Dame. Heggie is an avid boxer, training several times a week and Notre Dame has a boxing club that has its roots traced back to its founder and former football coach Knute Rockne. Heggie is looking to compete in the Bengal Bouts and come out as a champion.

Mount Dora football coach Chad Grabowski stated that Heggie’s lack of recruitment may go back to the fact that not many colleges know of Mount Dora High.

“They always go to Tavares and after Bruce committed to Notre Dame, I had one coach from a school call me and say they didn’t even know there was a Mount Dora High,” Grabowski says.

The Hurricanes went 6-4 last year and just missed making the playoffs. img_7907
