Lake-Sumter Community College Instructor “Professor of the Year”
LEESBURG (Nov. 30, 2009) – Lake-Sumter Community College now has bragging rights to having on its faculty the “Professor of the Year.” The award was presented to Math Instructor Sybil Brown during the Florida Association of Community College’s 60th Annual Convention held last week (Nov. 18-20) in Orlando. This was the fourth consecutive year that LSCC has been represented at the state finals.
Each of Florida’s 28 community colleges can send a representative to its regional competition. Three finalists are chosen to advance to the state competition held during the FACC Convention. At each of the three selection levels, the contestants give a fifteen-minute presentation that represents her/his teaching style and subject.
Brown taught from her Introduction to Statistics course. She incorporated a real-life example that she had used to interpret the percentiles given to her sister by her son’s pediatrician, explaining the boy’s body ratios. She humorously “translated” the medical statistics to give her sister a more clear meaning of the doctor’s report.
“Sybil drew upon her vast knowledge, witty personality and presentation skills to entertain the audience during her award-winning lesson,” praised Math department Chair Thom Kieft.
The Florida Association of Community Colleges represents faculty, staff, administrators, trustees, presidents and retirees from Florida’s public community colleges. Membership in the organization is currently over 8,000.
