Waking up some sort of echoes
Not my usual posting here, but many around Lake and Sumter County know my love for football and despite graduating from the University of South Florida, the football team that is near and dear to my heart is Notre Dame.
I always say “As a Polish Catholic from Chicago with a great uncle who was a priest (Father William Harris passed in 1982) that taught at Notre Dame, my birth certificate is blue and gold.”
And here we are again, Notre Dame looking for a coach after Charlie Weis was fired Monday. Now who will coach them? Everyone from Urban Meyer to South Sumter High coach Inman Sherman have been mentioned as candidates.
Just get someone in there who can win.
Look, no matter if your a Gator, Seminole, Sooner, Buckeye, Longhorn, Vol or even a Duck – there is one thing college football needs and that’s Notre Dame playing well.
People love them, even more hate them, but you rarely find anyone who says “I’m a Michigan fan mostly but I like Notre Dame too.” Yeah and Cubs fans “like” the White Sox and Red Sox fans “like” the Yankees – it just doesn’t happen.
A 9-3, 10-2, 11-1 Notre Dame football program raises the hearts of Irish fans and raises the boiling points of those who hate them. It’s a big reason as to what makes college football the greatest sport in this nation.
I follow news judgement circles after being in the sports media for many years and last Saturday during College Gameday, Kirk Herbstreit, usually a solid analyst when looking at a subject, brought up the point of “why are we talking about Notre Dame?” saying they’re irrelevant. He works for this little company ESPN - yet when Weis was fired on Monday, ESPN hardly pulled away from the story. They talked about the firing, showed the press conference with AD Jack Swarbrick, talked about replacements, what it will do for recruiting, what are current juniors Jimmy Clausen and Golden Tate going to do. Nearly all of SportsCenter was dedicated to Notre Dame.
As of right now, Tuesday morning there are 23 videos of the Notre Dame and Charlie Weis situation on ESPN.com - all since yesterday
Will they do the same for Bobby Bowden? Oh they’ll give it plenty of airtime, but not as much as Notre Dame.
Irrelevant? I hardly think so and this will cause the ND haters to come out. “Why so much about Notre Dame – who cares?”
But there you are, Notre Dame and college football – they go very nicely together.
Whoever the new coach is, make it a good one. Notre Dame needs to be back on the college football map.
