MODELS AND MAIDENS
It was a weekend of costumes this past weekend as I was part of the Fall Fashion & Finance Luncheon on Friday and the Renaissance Faire on Saturday.
The costumes used at the fashion show ranged from casual to evening dress and were part of a fashion show with models wearing clothes from area boutiques. They definitely worked it on the runway. It wasn’t the runway in Milan but it still was a showcase of dresses and outfits that had many in the audience murmuring compliments and snapping pictures.
I was one of the models asked to participate in the event, conjuring up feelings of excitement and nerves all at the same time. I just hoped that no one was going to be filming the fashion show just in case I were to trip on my dress or have my tag sticking out.
The event was a success and those that attended as well as those that participated were happy to giving their time, money and energy to help a worthwhile cause, The Haven of Lake and Sumter Counties. They truly do the hardest work ever on a daily basis!
As for other costumes I saw this weekend, the Renaissance Faire was an epic display of costuming and role-playing. Although smaller than I remember it was last year (maybe because the layout was different), it was interesting to see all that was there.
My friend from high school and I saw the ever-popular Jousting event, the hilarious Human Chess Board and the visiting musical groups. We also ventured into the tented shops but were more interested in seeing the items modeled by those walking around the event.
One costume that was definitely attention-grabbing was a man on stilts (or tall crutches) dressed as a gargoyle. He was dressed in all black and wore an impressive mask while also having his walking stilts covered in material to resemble wings. It was funny to hear moms taking pictures of him with their children and asking him to “raise up your wings” as their children looked at their moms in terror.
Something about seeing people in costume is very interesting to me and I applaud those that take the time to make these elaborate costumes so that the rest of us without the sewing gift can look on in wonder. I might try it myself someday but I’d rather see what others can create with fabric, thread and enormous amounts of time.
Whether it was wearing a beautiful bridesmaid dress or seeing others walk around in impressive costumes, it was definitely the weekend to get away from reality for a while and get into something out of the ordinary for a bit.
