Bring the Beasts Out
On a unusual humid night (but in Florida, it’s always humid), the Beast Feast 2009 commenced and there was a turnout of people wanted to eat everything from venison to quail to gator, along with “typical festival food” like chili and hot-boiled peanuts.
I was able to attend for the first time last night and was interested in trying something different, at least so that I could say I had it. My grandfather believed that you shouldn’t say you don’t like something if you haven’t tried it, which pushed me to try several things that I ended up liking and some things that I didn’t (I’m definitely not a cantaloupe fan!).
It was easy to find the Beast Feast at the Mote-Morris House with its semi-circle of white tents, flood lights and blaring contemporary music that all added to everyone’s fun. Several of Leesburg’s familiar faces were already present at the event, enjoying the festivities and relaxing from a long work week.
The layout helped a lot as I didn’t know where to start next but figured I would just start somewhere and go. After grabbing a water bottle, I walked along the food booths to see what would the best bite for the evening.
I decided to try my luck with venison, even though images of Bambi danced in my head as I held out my plate. My verdict after the first bite; it was kind of tough and chewy but still pretty tasty. Sorry Bambi.
After having gator tail at a previous dining review, I have found that I enjoy it and look for opportunities to have it again. Last night marked that time again as I was given two pieces of gator tail and enjoyed both with chili sauce. Very appetizing, indeed.
Just as I was getting my gator tail, the ominous clouds overhead (which I thought I would beat back to the car before they opened up) let the raindrops go and everyone bolted underneath the tents. The rain, however, didn’t “damper” the event’s spirits and people just continued their conversations under the food booth tents.
It was an interesting and appetizing event to attend and hopefully next year the rain won’t take away too much of the fun that can be had eating some unusual meals.
