Livin’ in America

If you haven’t gotten your September issue of LAKE Magazine yet, I might spoil a little bit for you the article about Gary McKechnie’s travel around the nation.

Gary, an award-winning travel writer, created a great trip book entitled, “USA 101, A Guide to America’s Iconic Places, Events and Festivals.” The book details 101 activities that everybody in the world should attend to get a real feel for America, a nation that does have some carefree moments now and again.

Among the places and events Gary covered were the Kentucky Derby, a Gospel gathering, the Kennedy Space Center, (had to get both of the Florida spots in there), New York’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Wyoming’s Yellowstone, Pearl Harbor in Hawaii and countless others. You feel like you are taking a first-time trip (or a walk down memory lane) as you read his book.

I perused some of the book in my spare time recently, finding it interesting and educational for this traveling girl. Gary becomes your portable tour guide as he brings you up to speed on the history of a landmark or annual festival, where to find info for travel needs and a day-by-day account of all to be seen and done while at the location.

Gary also shares some of the real-life experiences he had while writing the book and going to these notable areas. I enjoyed that most when I interviewed him a few months ago, hearing the stories and what experiences changed his life and perspective about the United States.

It’s worth reading the story, especially if you are into travel, as Gary was able to do what many of us would love to do as well. Travel and get paid for it, though he put many months of his life into the process of making the book.
