Pasta, Dolls and Boats

This past weekend was one of experiencing new attributes that make up my new county.

My weekend started out with an evening dinner celebration for a co-worker’s farewell. We toasted her at Red Sauce restaurant in The Villages and treated ourselves to appetizers, salads and pasta, mixed in with a few pieces of bread. Red Sauce could have created their own buffet for four people as the food portions they gave us for side items and appetizers allowed us to all get a full meal by separating our food four ways.

I left quickly after the dinner to see the opening of  Guys and Dolls Jr. at Lake-Sumter Community College, performed by the Tropic Troupe Children’s Theater Group of Leesburg http://thelakemagazine.net/archives/1015#more-1015. The show happened over two nights at Lake-Sumter and had children ranging in all ages practicing their New York swagger and gambling skills while they sang about love and money in NYC.

I commend the kids for their courage to take on the roles that required singing, acting and dancing. There was no denying they gave it their all and when a few mishaps happened backstage, they remained professionally poised and continuing on. Many celebrity actors don’t do that so it was impressive to see young children handle mistakes with ease.

Seeing the kids take to these roles and give it their all showed me how important it  is for us to have arts and culture in our schools or within the grasps of these kids. They need to have an outlet to experiment with their talents and personalities and I can attest, as I was a child of theater, that performing on stage helps with gaining confidence and self-esteem.

My other new experience of the weekend was riding on a raft behind a powerboat on Lake Eustis. I went for the afternoon with my dad’s co-worker and his family. He expertly manuevered his boat around the lake to give those on the raft the bumping, literally edge-on-your-seat ride of your life.

If we weren’t hanging on for dear life on the raft’s handles, we were laughing out loud at the adrenaline rush of the ride. However, all good things must come to the end as the last ride I took had us doing a 360 flip in mid-air before crashing down facefirst into the water. It wasn’t until myself and the guy I rode with bobbed back up onto the surface that we realize we weren’t in the raft anymore.

I also lost an earring during the crash but it was my fault to think I wouldn’t flip over and lose anything.

What a flurry of activity but it was a great way to enjoy life right here and right now! I’m ready for the next Lake County adventure.
